Often hear the saying but have never heard a good reason as to where the saying came from and why oats would "know" anything. Very thinly traded commodity. A pretty limited market (Cheerios, oatmeal and horse feed). And only a few countries that are major producers of oats. All a long way from the US. Pretty inelastic demand. And quality easily affected by weather unlike corn beans or canola. Doesn't add up to me to be a leader in market direction.

Oats in Canada are basically bought/sold on a cash price. Rarely does futures/basis price even get listed in a bid. Because they fluctuate wildly.
