Reading between the lines it looks as though your farming career has followed the same path as mine. I don't think anyone should do this if the owned base is not big enough to live off in a pinch. It will kill you or ruin your life In the process.

What you didn't address in your post is what the bto does to the land. They cannot take care of it, it is impossible (at least here) to be where they need to be when they need to be there. Land blows, weeds become resistant to latest treatment and ditching is not taken care of. I see it happening right next to me, some of it is land I used to farm.
