My vote would be to go with Speed Queen. If the clothes are going to be dirty and big loads, I'd go with a top loader that can use plenty of water and soap, rather than the water-saver models. I'm not sure what your wife's feelings are about "practical gifts", but you might want to include something under the tree that isn't all that practical too- just sayin'......
