I guess I don't view talking about the 80's and how it could be different or the same now as doom and gloom. I tend to think that I can learn from hearing other ideas and maybe I can come up with better ways to manage my farm to make sure I can not only survive but also hopeful prosper in the long run. There can certainly be tough times but there can also be opportunities in a down turn. I know I have read a lot about how a down turn is going to hurt the young farmers but I am not sure I agree with that. I think it could give some young guys opportunity's to grow there operations. Now there seems to be a few BTO's in every area and I think a down turn is going to hurt them long before it hurts young guys that haven't over spent and are not farming a lot of acres. I started farming in 1982 and I was way undercapitalized compared to most of my neighbors but I think the 80's kind of put us all on the same playing field. After about 4 years of farming I had just as much money as my neighbors that farmed 4,000 acres. We both had no money.
