East central Iowa, Camanche, Iowa | Tara,
The School of Hard Knocks tuition can be very expensive but very rewarding in the long run as long as people use the lessons taught there and apply them in the future to avoid making the same mistakes. My dad always said " I don't mind you making mistakes, just don't make the same one twice."
I believe the biggest problem with most farmers is we do not understand money and how it needs to keep moving to grow. I learned long time ago of the term "opportunity cost" and over the years I have taken that approach to marketing and buying inputs.
Lastly, because I refuse to compete for land that would leave me with very little return for my time spent, I have taken the approach of maximizing my return on every inch dirt I do control. A phrase I learned at Texas A&M fire training school is "Work smarter, not harder." I have applied this to every facet of my life including bodybuilding which is a hobby of mine. At 62.5 I think I look pretty good working smarter, not harder.
