We run gerringhoff and deere. The Gerringhoff is excellent in good corn but you have to stay in the row. It can go faster with less power than the deere. If you get off the row a bit, it looks rough. It doesn't pick poor corn ur down corn very well.

The Deere head picks poor corn and down corn much better.

I believe the Deere would be far better in brittle corn but I'm not sure I've ever had as bad as you're talking.

Gerringhoff has been absolutely bulletproof. 15 years running 2 and never stopped. I've had Deere 612 for 4 years and no trouble yet but my dads spent $6,000 on gear boxes, clutches and shafts on his.(likely a bit of abuse)
