rail pressure exceeded max limit.
there is a metering valve on high pressure fuel pump that sometimes sticks causing over pressure of common rail. if it sticks for too long it will blow rail relief . rail relief is usually only good for one or two "popoffs" then will stay open not letting fuel pressure build . sounds like you got lucky if its running ok now .
