I have been told there is a large delta operation in Mississippi that uses the high school football team as its cotton chopping crew every summer. I know this is not extended employment and I don't know how many hours a day they work. I will say however that is unusual today to see that kind of thing. Summer jobs as a kid is where I learned to work and build a work ethic. I remember many hours with my friends pulling weeds, hoeing and harvesting watermelons and cantaloupes, and toting irrigation pipe, among many other jobs. Some of the best experiences of my life. Most kids are not expected to work any more and those that do are pretty picky about what jobs they will do. I pay my high school son to work on the farm and I remind him all the time it only takes him two hours to earn what I used to make in a day... a long one to boot.
