Getting back to your original problem get a conditioner that goes ahead of the harvestor and separates the sticks from the nuts http://exactcorp.com/index.php/products/conditioners/

Then get an elevator with a de sticker that separates the sticks from the crop as it loads it onto the truck. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dXdlVfm3tAc

Before conditioners most people would run a de sticker chain on their reservoir cart that would leave the sticks in the orchard. With a conditioner it leaves the sticks in a nice pile at the end of the row.

With a $10 an hour wage to pick up sticks you need machinery to do the job.
