I read here fairly often that the 80s weren't the time to expand. But I know a few operations that more then doubled in size from 1980-1985 and doubled again from 85-90. And now are 4 times as big as they were in early 90s. Doesn't look like that worked too bad for them. They were young and took on alot of risk but it has paid off. Oh yeah, it worked fine for people who had ancestors that lived like paupers to pay for land that they inherited! Land around here went from close to $4000 to the magic number of $1200 basically over night with the promise from financial people that land would never go over $1500 again. Not too many years later it was $2500. My impression of the mid eighties was the financial lenders, and bank examiners lost their minds! Back to your original statement... if you had lots of money back then, you could basically steal everyone's land and equipment. |
