I remember the contract with America too well. What happened was that the more conservative farm states were volunteered for the chopping block, first, with the promise that the welfare payments in the larger states would later follow.
Any guess on what happened?
Edit: Moreover, you are not living in reality if you believe the government has plans to reduce EPA rules, etc. They will only be growing in spades, so you might as well accept that and whatever payments they are willing to give.
Edit: Serious question that I have wondered about and perhaps someone can explain it to me. Over the past year or so it seems that Ethanol is more than 10% lower than Regular. How can I get 10% in fuel for free by purchasing the ethanol product? Is there a subsidy that causes that? If so, are we going all willing to let that go as well?
