The model is for harvested acres, not planted acres. However; your comment(s) appears to apply to harvested acres also, as demonstrated in the attached chart of NASS reported harvested corn grain acres VS time(years). As shown on that chart, standard deviation of residual harvested corn grain acres (harvested acres - trend) is 5.832 million acres. 5.8 million acre harvest variation is a BIG variation and probably explains why harvested acres (or planted acres) is not an accurate predictor of corn production. If so, market buying acres is misleading, it should be buying yield !
