In order for yield to have such an outsized influence over production that implies that acres harvested and yield must be somehow negatively correlated. In years with higher than trend yield harvested acres is lower. And conversely, when yield is lower harvested acres is higher.
It also makes some sense that production has increased over time conincidently with yield but for independent reasons. Over time higher yielding varieties become available and simultaneously demand increases production.
