Two theories:

1. Consumer resistance to much higher prices for beef compared to pork at the meat counter; I often see shoppers pick up a package of steaks, ground beef... look at the price and put it back in the cooler; and move on to the pork or chicken counter. At my local grocery, I see more packages of beef marked down 30% in the past 'best before' date pile.  BBQ season is over.

2. Packers are slashing the price they pay, so they can buy replacements at much lower price and refill their feedlots; while retail price holds at exorbitant high prices, relative to pork.

All I've ever read on AT was that consumers would pay whatever Beef cost before they considered a cheaper meat.

Maybe consumers can read a price tag after all.
