Credentials. Imagine being the ceo and having a million dollars project. Now imagine that the project was an utter and complete failure. Do you think that the board members and stock holders would allow you to keep your job if you hired and put your trust in a high school drop out? Strange as it may seem, society wants blunders conducted by the most qualified. There is a way to document a string of success without education, but it is more difficult and takes longer. You get to a point where you have to learn more simply to communicate effectively about complex problems. Education is the best substitution for experience.

I found it interesting that in a recent study of unpaid student loans, the biggest problem is "for profit" education institutions. Those places that advertise on television and try to appeal to the people that are not college material. It turns out that that lack of extra effort doesn't make them more marketable with a degree from a "for profit" institution, so they wind up underemployed with student loans debt.
