The purpose of the spread is not to infer what price may be in the future, it's purpose is to bring grain to town in an orderly fashion. That usually means it pays storage but sometimes it wants the grain right now and the market inverts to penalize hedged inventory. There are some price predictors who claim the spreads can make some magical price projections ...... I see very little evidence to support such.
