Southeast Colorado | Depending on your life stage and how you got into farming that number can really vary. When I got started 20+ years ago with basically nothing my cost of production was huge. No paid for land, equipment, and mostly renting made for numbers that seemed silly to even be attempting to accomplish. At least the total dollars were small so with a little help from off farm income we were able to get our foot in the door. With costs escalating now and established farmers having such an advantage I would hate to be trying to start from scratch. I think some of the folks on here have termed it "barrier to entry". I know I use to feel silly when my cost of production would work out to something like $5 a bushel and the highest corn had ever been all time was $3.50. Guess I must have really wanted to farm! | |
