As for using bales on the sides there was a thread about it within the last week. Didn't seem like there was any good said about it. Just a good way to ruin your bales and your silage to which I agree. We make 40 ft wide piles which works well for our size herd not sure what yours is. As for covering it I am glad your goin to tarp that is a good start. We have used dirt to hold it down in the absence of tires. It works fine just a little more work to move it off especially in winter. We use mfwd loaders to push up and pack and larger tractor to do packing once pile is wide enough for it. I don't think the pull scraper would help much unless u make a really large pile. About the most important thing you can do is pack, pack, pack. Hope this helps. Good luck.
