Jesup, IA | I love a good look at things, so a little debate is a good thing.
But I would look at total returns (price appreciation plus other income) as the measure that best quantifies returns.
If I had a $1000 share of stock that went up in value $100/year, I'd see it as an equal return to a $1000 share that stayed the same price, but paid a $100/year dividend. As others have pointed out here, gold pays no annual income out, whereas land has an annual value stream.
