Mid Michigan | I told a buddy of mine last night at work that I will make more money working an 8 hour saturday at my town job than I will farming this year. Even got a 401K and some benefits thrown in the deal! That's with our old paid for equipment harvesting 30 bushel beans on paid for land. He figures for about $50,000- $100,000 he could get enough equipment bought so he could start farming his dads 80 acres and get busy breaking even on it. He was just ribbing me. He has no interest in working his familys place. I suggested he get a part time job working for minimum wage two weeks out of the summer and he will be miles ahead of his farming plan. I can't even imagine having equipment payments, land rent payments, and all the household expenses coming out of any farm budget this year. Wifey better have a good job in town. I think that's how a lot of guys justify this hobby. Wifes town job. | |
