Subject: This is really going to be a battle of wills

Jesup, IA
I just hung up the phone from answering an ad in the Farm Bureau Spokesman for a gentleman wanting to buy farmland. Thought I could do what Boone said and sell him an 80 a long ways from the home farm and generate a little working capital, yet lease it back.

Said he bought a farm at auction in recent days, so he was no longer in the market. Paid a little over $8,000 for a good piece of Iowa farmland. I asked if I could join the list to rent it. He said it has to be in beans next year he wouldn't consider less than $340. I politely mentioned that a 50 bu crop of $8.25 beans will only gross $412.50. That gives me a whopping $72.50 to plant and harvest the crop, including all inputs. I said it very respectfully, and he literally hung up on me.
