Red River Valley
OK lets start with Imputs

Seed for beans and Wheat were both for the most part bin run - meaning you saved seed from the previous crop and used it for the next crop - cleaning cost were about .03 cents a bushel locally.

We maybe planted 10% of your wheat and beans with registered seed to allow for the bin run the next year.

couple bucks an acre for treflon ( preplant) on beans

couple bucks an acre for 2,4-d on the wheat.

maybe run through the beans once with a cultivator.

Fert on wheat was maybe 40 lbs of 18-46-0 with the drill and if the crop looked really good might broad cast 80 lbs over the top I would think it would run you $15 per acre for fert on wheat none used on beans.

Corn

seed was maybe $30-40 a bag full 56LBS bag seeded at a rate of 25 to 26K

Fert was mostly hauled out of the Barn in the fall and spread across the field

spring of the year would go with 100-150 lbs of fert Price was about $20 - $30 per acre

Spray would run you about $7.00 per acre

Cultivate 2 times maybe 3

always did at least 2 passes with field cultivator in the spring to make sure that field was level and get the second flush of weeds hoping to get things big enough to be able to cultivate.

so as you can tell inputs were much cheaper back then.

there were things a man and his wife could do to make extra income and that income could actually make a dent into some of your expenses not just hope to find enough outside income to live off.

needed to edit - that this was all my operation cost not meant to reflect how others farmed.
