Central Iowa | Lots of great valid points above. One other factor is the straight line winds a large part of the state has to deal with every year. I believe these wind events force the seed companies to focus on root strength characteristics for stand ability, rather than a more yield based approach.
Our highest yields were in 2004 with a large percentage of our corn planted to a root lodge prone variety of pioneer that could really pump out the yield. The companies no longer offer those products "here" as many times the field would be blown down and be a disaster.
Also we need it hot early and cool late, in general. My opinion.
