Jesup, IA | The Pro Farmer editorial staff will adjust anything the same as last year. Here is exactly what is happening post tour:
Chip Flory and the other tour leaders will assemble in a room, discuss the Midwest Crop Tour data, areas that are out of the sampled area (tour covers about 80% of where corn is grown), management factors (like extra nitrogen, lack of inputs), disease pressure, likely weather patterns through harvest, and put out an estimate just like any other forecasting firm. They will also adjust for any other factors (i.e. the part of Nebraska sampled is always heavy on dryland).
I read these comments that there is some specific formula they use. I can assure you, they are just using experience and data to make a decision that helps their paychecks from Farm Journal Media coming.
Disclaimer: I helped on the tour a half dozen years, until I felt that I had seen and learned what I wanted to learn about the Corn Belt, didn't want to spend a week away from my family, and didn't feel comfortable selling tractors or seed corn on behalf of the companies who make the tour financially possible (CNH & Pioneer). Also, the PF staff is just a few miles away from me in Cedar Falls, they are friends of mine, and I get frustrated seeing their honest effort unduly criticized. | |
