southern MN | Here in Minnesota its the weather. In my rolling hills getting the low ground to dry off in spring and keeping the high ground wet enough in August does not happen very often. Couple times in a lifetime? My wet climate and heavy soil is forgiving, its difficult to actually destroy a corn crop: but its also very difficult to get a great stand and yield the whole 1300 feet of every row when you cross 3 hills and 4 depressions in that distance....
I don't think seed improvements are coming very fast, either. They probably developed the breeding traits that were easy years ago, making improvements in seed now is more research, less reward as we push higher.
Pioneer gives up stalk strength for more grain - but less makes it to the bin then. Others have a tougher stalk for my tougher soils so I can harvest all the corn I grow: but in a great year I give up some potential.
Tell me what the weather will be for the year and I can up my yield average a lot. Right now I have to best guess.....
Its the weather.
