S Illinois | They stop using the 5 year average weight if the ear is mature enough to do actual measurements on them. For example if a plant has an ear on it, the husk length and diameter can be easily measured. So if ears husks are above normal length and circumference then calculated ear weight for that sample will be above average. So out of all the samples pulled for the Aug crop report, my guess would be more than 60% of the samples were mature enough to use actual measurements. 5 year average ear weights are only used on the samples that are too immature to take measurements on. So my guess would be 2/3 of the samples were measured using the kernal row length model and 1/3 of the samples used the 5 year average. Where the big problems arise using these measurements is kernel size and kernel abortion which are not as easy to measure until maturity. | |
