| The EPA, like almost every government agency, department, or any other regulating arm of the government, at one time was probably established to fulfill a legitimate need but now is doing far more harm than good. The air is not perfectly clean now, but it never has been, and never will be. What slight improvements we are achieving now is coming at a cost far, far greater than any benefit. Air quality is no different than anything else. At the beginning, a great benefit can be had by very modest expenditures, but as the easy gains are made quickly and cheaply, the further gains are small, and much more costly. There is a point that is reached where the last few percent of gains cannot be reached by spending any amount of money. I feel we are at that point now.
It is maddening that once an agency is established, it can hardly ever be abolished after its work is done. The people within the agency will keep coming up with more and more scenarios to frighten the public and assure themselves of keeping their high paying jobs.
