Central Ga | You handled it very well. Don't kick yourself over what you wish you had done. I think you were most likely totally surprised by your exchange with the guy and it is normal to reflect and think of something you could have done differently. Although something like this may never happen again I think you will be prepared to deal with it. Don't really know how I would have handled it. As farmers we never know when and where this kind of situation will occur, if it ever does, but I don't really think most of us would ever expect it to happen at the spur of the moment on or adjacent to our farms.
A business acquaintance visiting in my home last week told me his brother believes that Roundup "poisons the soil". I know his brother and I consider him to be a level headed guy. He has a some cattle and is a self employed businessman. I told my visitor to look out my kitchen window where a beautiful field of cotton is growing across the road. I told him that field has had as much as 1/2 gallon of Roundup applied just about every year for the last 18-20 years. I also explained that Roundup has no soil residual activity and if it was poisoning the soil there is no way plants could thrive the way the cotton is thriving. The brother comes by my farm every couple of months and buys minerals from me for his cows. I am going to try and be prepared to give him some insight into the use of Roundup. It really is amazing how much bad information and how many misinformed people are out there. As farmers we just need to try and be prepared to make that unexpected defense of how we farm and why we do the the things we do.
