Subject: RE: nitrogen on soybeans

I have done some trials on beans and didn't notice a lot of advantage to it. I have been looking at some high ph soils that are extremely wet and wondering if adding some AMS would help. I had a friend in North Dakota put on some slow release urea at planting and all that did was made the Beans not nodulate at all because it didn't have to because the nitrogen was already there. He ended up side dressing more urea in mid-july when the beans started turning really yellow. All he accomplished was an average bean crop with higher cost. I would agree with the earlier post about doing a nitrate test and maybe a tissue test and seeing what your nutrient balance is first. Also i think applications need to be made more at the time of pot set. The plants shouldn't need additional Nitrogen until after they stop making it themselves.
