Midwest
I have read studies that show Midwest farmers remove more nitrogen from our corn fields as corn grain than we apply on average, ( thus depleting our organic matter over time) and even if we did not apply any nitrogen, that the soil bacteria would release enough nitrogen to keep the water in Des Moines above the 10 ppm limit at certain times of the year. just like it is now with millions of acres of corn being grown in the Raccoon watershed. there is no way we will ever get the nitrogen out of the streams and rivers.
