I can't answer your question in regards to your K needs ( I would also like to know the answer to that question) but as for cultivating it is more than just guidance to cultivating. You are needing to cultivate out the weeds in between the rows and cover the weeds in the row. It may be a fine line between covering the crop (slabs or clods) and covering the weeds.
