Competition is so fierce that dollar's aren't enough to keep everything going. The moment you don't want to follow the landlords suggestion, you will see five different pickups in their driveway. They own the ground; they could let it grow up in saplings and sticker bushes if they wanted.
None of my landlords require organic methods (I have some possible leads that do though...) but all of them have grass they want mowed and want to see proof of soil health. I do that stuff anyway just as a service. Plow gardens, clear driveways in winter, keep all access areas graveled, bale any waterways, etc.
I am a young guy on a low budget, so I try to make myself valuable to the landowner through methods other than rent payments.
