I dont think the pollen dies, it becomes sterilized and falls to the ground without fertilizing the silks. That is one reason I like to split planters with a little different maturity. Gives you a little longer window to pollenate.

And you are 100% correct. Those plants need to cool off at night. Respiration. Even if all you can hook is a couple tenths of rain it helps to cool the plants down a little bit. If the air temp is 80 outside the field at night it will almost certainly be warmer in the canopy of the corn field. Hotter during the day too. Those plants pretty much shut off to stay alive, and dont care so much about reproducing.
