western NY | 2 years ago I spread soybeans over all my pea ground after they were harvested and disked them in and got the ground nice and smooth. Used about 300 lbs per acre of seed I got real cheep, they were retured treated seed that had to be disposed of anyway. They got about 3' tall and had some nodulation but never set any pods. I then killed them off with Grmoxone, mowed them down and notilled wheat into them. It was by far the best wheat we ever raised.
Even if you don't plan to plant wheat I think they would still make an excellent cover crop. By spring they should be melted down so you could plant corn into them with very little work but still have enough cover for the winter. Just ask around your seed dealers and see if they have any beans they need to dispose of. | |
