Central IA | Well it looks to me like there's 16+ ft of grass on that "ridge". Also that's a drainage ditch, not a creek. Drainage ditches are man made and used for tile outlets. Creeks are naturally occurring and drain above ground water. Therefore when you get a bunch of water creeks overflow. You don't want a high ridge next to a creek. You want the bank to slope I to the creek. That way when it floods out I to the field it can drain back I to the creek. So therefore next to a creek you want a buffer of grass because that's your only protection from above ground contaminants entering the creek. There's plenty of guys in this area that farm right up next to the creek and have washouts running into the creek. No wonder consumers think we don't care about the environment. A 16' border isn't going to take up crap for acreage. If farmers would've been doing this from the get go there would be less strict regulation being handed down to us. | |
