Subject: RE: Hog manure question

It's not as good as it used to be. The barns I haul out of have gone to a ration that produces less phosphorus so the analysis isn't quite as as good but the manure has saved me a pile of money over the years in fertilizer costs. It even covers your sulfer needs. It's my experience and others around me that you can't count on the nitrogen benefit being as great as the analysis would indicate. As long as you realize you will have compaction on the ends where they enter the field ( I haven't experienced compaction from it otherwise), if they haul when it's wet they will track mud on the road which if bad enough can cause problems with the County and neighbors. I try to apply as much as possible by my farmstead so people don't think I don't want to smell it myself although I've never had a single complaint. It's not the pot at the end of the rainbow but I would hate to lose it.
