Subject: RE: Steiger vs Dozer on Tile Plow

Central IL
We have a Bron mounted plow on a challenger 865. When it's dry or even just somewhat muddy we can pull all day and never hook. But we are only using it for laterals and generally don't get over 4 foot deep. But can pull 5 if needed. Never plowed anything bigger than 4". Wheel anything bigger. Most likely bottom ground you will be doing good to maintain 3 foot depth so I would think you would get along just fine with an old steiger. I've seen guys have a rack on the front to add concrete weights when they need to go deep. Our challenger weighs right around 50k and the plow weighs another 9k but I don't think much of the plow weight helps pull because a lot of it is just sitting on the ground. Weight and low speed are the biggest key for plowing. The cat was the heaviest and slowest geared we could find. There have been millions of feet of tile pulled in with steigers with mounted double link plows. I would shop around and find one setup like that all ready to go. You will most likely be putting pipe in on .05 grade on bottom ground so a good double link plow would be your best bet. You can get an old one for same price as a new pull type and be setup good. Go to linkmfg.ca he will either have what you need or can find it.
