To me it sounds like you have gotten very attached to some ground you don't own or rent. Nothing good can come from that unless you buy it in this situation.
The couple you met are in a different stage of their lives now. They won't be able to work together well and will communicate differently with you (or not at all). It's just life. It's sad but in my opinion you should move on.
