Have had both over the years in trucks and tractors and still have a three 3406s and one 855.  3406 wins hands down.  Better torque, better lugging, smoother running and starts better.  Only thing the 855 has is cheaper to work on.  Not saying the 855 is a bad engine.  Cat is just better.
