North central, IA | No way would I pay 3k for a kid's instrument. I probably wouldn't pay 500 for the first one. Have him take kazoo lessons in the summer and see if he has any genuine interest or aptitude.
Several years ago when our youngest was the same age as your boy she came home from school with the announcement that Mrs. I was going to be at school the next day to help them choose instruments for the following year. Mrs. I was going to examine the kid's mouths to see what instrument was most appropriate to the shape of their mouths. I said you tell Mrs. I that your mouth is shaped like either a flute or a clarinet because those are the two we already own.
