Having a wife who is a music teacher makes me suggest trying to find one to rent to start with. A lot of kids that age think they want to play an instrument and when they find out how much work it is and practice it takes, they lose interest. If he likes it and sticks with it, then you can always purchase one, plus you will know more what to look for.
