Subject: RE: Corn planting depth

Colby, Kansas
I'm not in MN, but we are often going deep to get into moisture here. Some of my best stands have come from corn planted 3". This would be in no-till silt-loam soils with good amounts of surface residue. EDIT: and also with soil temps somewhat above threshold 50*F.

I always advocate for being on the deeper side of things "here". I've seen by far more wrecks from planting too shallow than too deep. Additional depth IMO helps with uniformity of emergence, the shallower you plant the more spatial variability those seeds will see in regards to soil temperature and moisture. The soil is a wonderful buffer, the deeper you plant the more uniform the environment the seeds are being placed into (generally).

Again my experiences are based off high-plains dryland, not Minnesota so maybe not worth much.
