just a tish NE of central ND
I should also mention in addition to 95H's reply to take a look at the twine fingers, tucker fingers is what we used to call them, and see if they push the twine over in to the correct position so the twine lays proper in the twine disks and falls into the guide. The linkage on ours, the cam and roller that runs it wears and they need adjsutment on occasion. Also, there (if it is like our old JD's) should be a wire form or guide, mounted below the heads and above the bale case that the fingers lay the twine into or behind when the needles come up.If this is broke or bent/ missing, It wont tie very consistantly.Another thing to check is that you didnt make a mistake and put the twine below the roller on the needle/ needles instead of over the roller on the needles when you thread the machine. This makes the twine pull through the needle hard and will cause unexplained open bales, but only on occasion.(ask me how I know)
(Addition) (forgot to mention) if it matters, our old JD 24 twine baler used to have two bolts sticking up above the bale case along the slit that the string is visable traveling through the chamber,, (one on each side)and under the heads somewhere there was a bolt on each side sticking up verticle that a twine could hook onto and tear it off as it traveld compressed through the chamber after it was tied.We had a makeshift sheild bolted over it.The twine would loosen and lift / curl through the slit at each plunger stroke as you kept baleing and sometimes you would catch the twine being caught on those bolts in the process of tearing off.
