You're the one looking at it backward. The big guys are good enough managers to know that it doesn't pay to have a few million dollars sitting around for months until they're needed for next year's inputs. Even at low interest rates, that much money can make more per day than many full time jobs. You're better off to invest at least some of the cash somewhere that it makes a return all year long and then borrow some operating money for a few months per year.
