West Chazy, New York

Just remember that it takes several years to make a long term trend.  Yes, markets can and do move up and down rapidly, and prices can change a lot in months or a year, but the beef business takes a lot of investment and a lot of time, so big swings in production can take years to become fully established.  It's a short term decision to change a field or even a farm from corn to beans.  It's a bit more complicated to spray out a pasture and plant corn.  It's a major commitment to build fence, run water lines, put up working facilities and buy two more four wheelers and a dog to run cows, but given a long enough run of lower grain prices and higher cattle prices that is exactly what will happen.  Denice will have to produce a few more litters of puppies before all this is over.
