I never understood that either. Not Catholic, but my belief is that Jesus came to earth and lived and died to pay for the sins of the whole world and satisfy the requirements of the Father, all of the others are/were merely human sinners like myself. I don't believe that any of the human spirits in heaven can even hear someone down here on earth praying to them. I am sure that Jesus can and does all the time, no need for another intercessor.

"For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus."
1 Timothy 2:5

"Therefore He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them" (Hebrews 7:25)

Jesus is the one mediator and he is always there to intercede for us.
