Ph Balance is the most critical.

Buy some litmus papers and do a test. They generally will let you know what you are in need of or lacking and you can usually buy the additive to adjust.

The rift raft of changing out coolant every so often is doing the same thing except where a coolant system has no filter on it, changing it is supposed to help in keeping a cleaner looking system. Eliminate the "brown water" you see after time.

I've never seen any other engine that is so particular to this lack of maintenance as these 60 series detroits.

I myself am guilty of not keeping up on coolant systems like I should. If it's green, it's good. Bad state of mind to fall into.
