He probably needs to rebuild his gut flora. Eat probiotics, like yogurt, cottage cheese, soft cheese, aged cheese, dry sausage, sauerkraut, dietary yeast, things like that. Heck, even a teaspoon of organic garden soil, must be millions of bacteria in them. Avoid soda and maybe reduce portions for a while, he is apparently eating more than he can digest at the time.
There's 5-10 microorganisms living in our body for every body cell, about 3 pounds of them, and 100 billions, that's the same number of stars in our Milky Way galaxy. Digesting stuff is just a small part of what they do, the most important part is keeping us healthy, synthesizing vitamins and stuff we need, etc.
