What you describe looks more like macaroni gratin, which I much prefer.
The simplest recipe is just mixing the cooked macaroni, black pepper and butter in an oven dish, then adding a good layer of real Swiss cheese grated on top before baking. A better recipe adds pan-fried bacon and mushrooms to the mix, uses sour cream instead of butter, and also has the cheese layered on top.

Then you have the mac and cheese variants, which incorporate the cheese in the mix. But instead of using processed cheese like Velveeta, make a small Bechamel sauce instead: Pan-fry onions and ham in oil and butter, add a spoonful of flour, and when it's golden brown, slowly dilute with milk while stirring. Mix in the Swiss cheese and warm cooked pasta, add a small layer of grated cheese before baking.
