I wonder the same thing when it comes to recommended "maintenance" procedures. There can be known problem areas that should be looked at in certain vehicles. Other than that however, for the most part if you just do basic maintenance procedures most vehicles will serve you well and not give much trouble and the money you save will be enough to help get you into a newer vehicle sooner if you wish.
